Writer for The Horse Racing Scoop Blog
Danny Brewer is a native of Smyrna, Tennessee and has been a “sports scribe” since 1993. Having covered a variety of sports over the years, Brewer is currently a member of the United States Basketball Writers Association, College Football Writers Association, Turf Publicists of America, is the chairperson of the Rutherford County high school football Top Ten Committee, and a voter in the national Thoroughbred polls published by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.
Danny still covers a variety of sporting events throughout the year, but Thoroughbred horse racing holds a special place in the heart of “the Sports Brew”. His first real exposure to the sport of kings came in 1989 during the thrilling wins by Sunday Silence in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. A year later he attended his first Kentucky Derby as a fan and saw Unbridled prevail. Brewer’s detailed coverage of the sport as a journalist began in 2006 and has continued to escalate each year since. Having covered many major “stick and ball” events over the years, Danny is often asked about his passion for the ponies.
“When Street Sense won the Kentucky Derby in 2007, he didn’t try and hold out for a bigger contract,” proclaims Brewer. “And when I wanted to talk to Lava Man before he was the lead pony for I’ll Have Another at the 2012 Kentucky Derby he was eager to listen. Of course I did have a carrot in my hand. But really, the horses and jockeys are fantastic athletes, the competition is great in many ways, and it gives me an opportunity to chronicle a national sport in a Grantland Rice-esque fashion.”
