Folks associated with the second leg of the Triple Crown have long said the Kentucky Derby is only run to decide who is good enough for the Preakness. If that is truly the case, does that mean only California Chrome, Ride On Curlin, and General a Rod are worthy? I think that saying originated long before the breeding industry dollars became so huge and owners began skipping the second leg to freshen for the Belmont. A win in any of the Triple Crown races often guarantees big money when it comes to stud fees and as in all other sports…cash is king. The jury is obviously still out on this three-year old class, but depth appears to be present as the seven “new shooters” that will join the Derby trio appears to be a talented group. So as we prepare to witness the 139th running of the Preakness, not only should you tip your hat to California Chrome for running at the Triple Crown, but also Ride On Curlin and General a Rod because the Derby proved they are good enough for the Preakness too!
