CREATOR HEADED TO THE BELMONT BECAUSE HE BELONGS
Ah, the third jewel of the Triple Crown. The Belmont Stakes truly is the “test of a champion”. That is why a hall of fame trainer is sending his horse to New York next week, because he is worthy of the exam.
Newly elected hall of famer Steve Asmussen has enjoyed more than his fair share of success since taking out his trainers license in 1986. Obviously a pretty good judge of Thoroughbred talent, the South Dakota native is sending Creator to the sweeping turns of Big Sandy for the mile and a half Belmont Stakes on June 11. And in reality, his reasoning for the decision is pretty simple.
“Creator is a very talented three-year old that belongs with that group,” says Asmussen. “That is just who he is. He comes from a nice pedigree and he is plenty good enough to be in with that class of runners.”
The South Dakota native has won over 7,000 races, but the Belmont Stakes does not happen to be included in that list. He has smelled the smoke twice (Curlin 2nd 2007, Nehro 4th 2011), but is yet to get the cigar. Creator could be the colt that delivers because of some marked improvement during his three-year old campaign. With two wins and a second in five starts this year, this son of Tapit does his best running late. His Arkansas Derby triumph demonstrated that powerful closing kick, but unfortunately, this great-grandson of Unbridled did not get a chance to unleash his beast in the Kentucky Derby.
“We had some unfortunate things happen in the race and he did not get to show everyone who he really is,” says Asmussen. The Derby was just a little unlucky for Creator, but there is plenty of summer left and people are going to see who he is. Creator is a very nice horse.”
