BAYERN HEADED TO DEL MAR

So what has happened to 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic champ Bayern?

For those wondering if the workhorse that wowed as a three-year old with stunning gate-to wire wins in the Woody Stephens, Haskell, and B.C. Classic was a one-year wonder, he will soon pony up an answer. The four-year old campaign for the Bob Baffert trained son of Oflee Wild has not started off too good as he finished a very disappointing 6th in the 7 furlong Churchill Downs Stakes on Kentucky Derby Day and then faded to 10thin a tough Met Mile on Belmont Day.

“We are going to bring him back in the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 25,” says Baffert. “From there we want to run him in the Pacific Classic. Those are our short term goals.”

The San Diego Cap is a grade 2 race for older horses and run at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track. Baffert won this same race last year with Fed Biz for the same connections (Kaleem Shah) that saddle Bayern. The Pacific Classic is run at a mile and a quarter and will be contested on August 22.

Now that he is back in the Golden State, will we see the same speed and stamina from Bayern that allowed him to flourish in 2014? Stay tuned
