Add Cupid to the list of Kentucky Derby contenders from the barn of Bob Baffert. A lovely run to the winner’s circle in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 19 has this son of Tapit on the fast track to Churchill Downs. Taking a field of 14 gate-to-wire (22.96 opening quarter, 46.82 half mile, 1:43.84 mile and a sixteenth) under jockey Martin Garcia, Cupid picked up his second win and first stakes victory in his third career start. Responding to Garcia when challenged in the stretch, Cupid won by a widening two lengths over Whitmore. “I think the Derby distance (mile and a quarter) is no problem after seeing him run in the Rebel”, says Baffert who has now won the Rebel Stakes six times. “He’s a gutty horse and Martin did a great job with the ride.” (photo credit Coady Photography)CUPID - The Rebel Gr II - 56th Running - 03-19-16 - R10 - OP - Finish 2
