Sometimes we forget how delectable certain delights can be until we get another taste. There are those dishes that just throw you into great white shark mode and it becomes a feeding frenzy. You just can’t seem to get enough. So what in the world am I talking about? Well, I am making reference to a one- word dish that is served up twice a year and it’s called Keeneland.
Like Bananas Foster, the Keeneland Race Course Spring Meet burns brightly and delivers some of the tastiest of treats. Nestled in the heart of horse country, this gentleman’s track features some of the greatest things the Thoroughbred game has to offer. With some of the best equine athletic action in the sport as the centerpiece, fashion, food, and fun are also front and center.
Here are just a few of the highlights that have been served up this spring at this adrenaline-rich race course located in Versailles, Kentucky. A weather-related rescheduled Bluegrass Stakes day did not disappoint as Burnham Square and East Avenue both stamped themselves as prime players in the male three-year-old division. Carl Spaclkler’s dominance in the Maker’s Mark Mile was a real blast. Trainer Brendan Walsh has displayed his conditioning brilliance on several occasions including a Doubledogdare Stakes win with 38-1 shot Gin Gin on April 18.People of influence throughout society have visited these hallowed grounds and enjoyed the excitement during the past two weeks.
“Keeneland is the cherry on top of the sundae”, says celebrity chef Bobby Flay, whose horse Crudo won at Keeneland on April 19. “This place is in the center of the horse racing universe so being able to stand in the winner’s circle here is really something special. You have the burgoo and the bourbon along with all the other things that make this sport magnificent. Keeneland is a wonderful place to be.”
The Keeneland Spring Meet closes April 25. A fall delicacy will be put on the table from October 3 through October 25.
