Another magnificent day of Thoroughbred racing has told us a couple of things about the national scope of the sport.
The three-year old male showcase at PARX made things as clear as the Mississippi River in that division. With Connect winning the Pennsylvania Derby and Kentucky Derby champ Nyquist and Preakness winner Exaggerator never really becoming factors it means we have some muddy waters. Who is the best in that group??? It may come down to someone beating older horse later in the year to decide who gets year end honors. One thing you can say after that $1.25 million race is Gun Runner always competes. He came close to making the PA Derby his coming out party, but just could not quite get there. His second place effort told us again he is a quality horse, but that can be said for quite a few in that division.
While the Pennsylvania Derby was a mud puddle, the Cotillion came out clear as a mountain spring. Songbird is something special. Now standing with a perfect record after 11 starts, it was mission accomplished for the Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly. She romped against a smaller but very talented group. Before the race he said they treated every time out as a proving ground. Well, I think the hall of fame conditioner even further pounded his point home. Songbird is certainly the most accomplished three-year old in the country and is on a path that few have ever traveled.
