There are plenty of plays you can make on a Sunday. Play golf, play checkers, play with your dog, and maybe even play with your kids. Sunday, September 5, the play should be Kentucky Downs.

The wonderful world of Thoroughbred racing has so many positive layers it’s downright mind boggling. One of the rewarding things is the low risk high yield opportunities in the speculation department. The six day FanDuel Kentucky Downs meet will be off and running with live racing beginning this Sunday.

Recent times has seen an explosion take place at this “country” track nestled just north of the Tennessee State line. Big purses have made it the place to be for horsemen and the unpredictable outcomes on the only European style track in the country have yielded some outstanding payouts to the horse player. Of course the key to cashing a big ticket is simple…guess right!

With that in mind we are going to throw out a little late pick 3 advice on the opening day card. It’s a 50 cent wager and we will pick two horses in each of the last three races. Our total ticket price will be $4 as we are playing 50 cents on each combination. If we have a winner in all three we cash a ticket. If we pick some longshots that hit we can cash a REALLY nice ticket. Without further ado, here we go.

The first race on our ticket will be the Dueling Grounds Oaks. Run at a mile and five sixteenths and restricted to three year old fillies it is carded as race 9 on the program. We like the 6 horse Adventuring (3-1 morning line). Trained by Brad Cox, she has finished in the money in six of seven lifetime starts with two wins. We also like the 3 Inthewinnerscircle (9-2) because that is where we want to be. A winner in her last race, this filly by Medaglia d’Oro is trained by Mark Casse and ridden by the little Frenchman Julien Leparoux.

Next up is the Dueling Grounds Derby which is run at the same distance for three year old boys. We start here with the race favorite breaking from post 12 Du Jour (5-2 morning line). Trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Joel Rosario, this son of Temple City has three wins this year. Our other selection here is taking a bit more of a swing as we like Modern Science (12-1). This Irish-bred trained by Ian Wilkes has never been worse than third in six career runs.

We cap the ticket with a six and a half furlong race for females who have never won before. These type races can be wide open so we are going to take a big swing here. We like the 3 horse Front Street (8-1 morning line). The daughter of one of our all-time favorite runners (Street Sense), she has finished second or third in six of seven starts. Trained by Ken McPeek and ridden by Brian Hernandez, this could be her day. Our other selection is the 7 horse Dibble Dibble (30-1). Trained by Ben Colebrook, this daughter of Kitten’s Joy has never raced before so hopefully that means she doe not know how to lose.

Back a horse and get paid!
