Say what you will about the 2014 class of three-year old Thoroughbreds, but the million dollar Pennsylvania Derby proved that perhaps the entirety is pretty good. Bayern’s smashing, track-record trouncing of California Chrome and six others elevated this group of runners as a whole. As the star of this show, Bayern proved he is nothing short of sensational when loose on the front end. Cruising on the lead early, this Bob Baffert trained speedster turned for home and finished with authority in a track record time of 1:46.96 for the mile and an eighth. A smoking run like that 5 3/4 length win means next out the game plan for the opposition should not forget about that front-running phenom named Bayern. In winning the Pennsylvania Derby, this son of Offlee Wild earned his fifth win in nine lifetime starts. We know California Chrome has two jewels of horse racing’s Triple Crown and we understand Shared Belief is unbeaten, but remember, Bayern is dog gone dangerous!
