As the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes draws ever closer, Triple Crown contender California Chrome is shining as bright as ever. In preparation for the June 7 “test of a champion”, this son of Lucky Pulpit has been galloping at Belmont Park and according to assistant trainer Alan Sherman “training like a monster”. If Chrome can indeed win the mile and a half Belmont, he will become the 12th Triple Crown winner and first ever California-bred Thoroughbred to accomplish perhaps the most difficult feat in the sporting world. The last horse to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont was Affirmed back in 1978.
