KENTUCKY DERBY 144 RUNDOWN
The Kentucky Derby is the greatest single sporting event in the world today. For 144 years people far and wide have wondered the same thing…who’s going to win? Let’s try and shed a little light on the 20 entrants lining up for a run at immortality. Listed according to their qualifying points total, here’s the field and a thought on each.
- Magnum Moon- Unbeaten and unraced at 2, Arkansas Derby winner gives trainer Todd Pletcher a chance to repeat
- Good Magic- Breeders Cup Juvenile champ looked like the real deal in winning Bluegrass Stakes. Son of Curlin has tactical speed.
- Audible-Florida Derby winner came from off a hot pace to win in dominating fashion-looked pretty special in doing so for Todd Pletcher.
- Noble Indy- Louisiana Derby winner fought hard through the wire to win by a neck and should be fresh after 6 week break.
- Vino Rosso- Wood Memorial winner gives Todd Pletcher 4 of the top 5 points earners and has Johnny Velazquez in the irons.
- Bolt d’Oro- Versatile running style could bode well for this West Coast colt and being ridden by 3-time winner Victor Espinoza doesn’t hurt.
- Enticed- has talent from mom (It’s Tricky) and dad (Medaglia d’Oro) with a win beneath the twin spires already
- Mendelssohn- Foreign invader has been scary good and poses a real threat with his front end speed.
- Justify- If he gets the trip his talent will carry him to the circle Trainer Bob Baffert has won it 4 times before.
- Flameaway-Has got the guts and always runs hard for trainer Mark Casse. Needs to run his best race to have a chance here.
- Solomini- Baffert’s “other” horse has ran big at times and belongs here. A grinder that can benefit from heavyweights battling on the lead.
- Bravazzo- Trainer D Wayne Lukas will have his horse ready. Has won 2 of 3 this season including Risen Star at Fair Grounds.
- My Boy Jack-A real closer that all that front end speed could greatly benefit- Trip is important, but that’s true for all of’em. Has a Derby-winning move!
- Promises Fulfilled-Head strong and speedy, this son of Shackleford that won Fountain of Youth runs like he ain’t scared…because he’s not
- Free Drop Billy- Has a second and two thirds in 3 starts this year but all against top company for trainer Dale Romans. Tactically dangerous!
- Lone Sailor- Courageous second in Louisiana Derby puts him in the gates but might be in much deeper water here.
- Hofburg- Trainer Bill Mott is a hall of famer but has never won the Derby. Second place in Florida Derby but is in very tough.
- Firenze Fire- Won 4 of his first 6 starts but 0 for 3 lately. The New York road has not been kind to Derby starters of late.
- Combatant-Has only one career win but always seems to be close having not finished worse than 4th in 7 career starts
- Instilled Regard-Late edition to the field gives hall of fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer another chance at his first Derby win.
