Kentucky Downs enjoyed a record setting meet in their recently completed five day foray. The average paid in purses to the winning horsemen was just over a whopping $1.7 million per race day. That is the highest total per day in the nation. The total paid out during the all-grass meet was $8,619,000 highlighted by the $600,000 grade 3 Calumet Farms Kentucky Turf Cup. The purse total was up 9% from last year. The total wagered from all sources during the five glorious days of racing was $30, 246,887.68. A total of 522 horses ran during the meet for an average of 10.4 per race which is also tops in the country.
Ken Ramsey was the leading owner at the meet and put things in perspective. “Money makes the mare go round and everybody is going to Kentucky Downs for the huge purses,” says Ramsey. “Kentucky Downs is a special place.”
By the numbers, 2017 was an awfully good year at the Franklin, Kentucky track.
