Jockey Mike Smith has long been a giant in the sport of Thoroughbred racing. With over 5,000 career wins, this Roswell, New Mexico native has been an identified flying object at many of the top tracks across the country in four different decades. Still regarded as the best big race jocks in the game, the all-time leader in Breeders’ Cup wins (20) is still driven by something simple. “I really enjoy what I do,” says Smith. “Riding is everything to me and is my life. As long as it doesn’t get boring, I will continue to ride.” Smith also attributes his success to something simple as well. When asked about his 3 wins and two third place finishes in 6 starts in the highly acclaimed Pacific Classic at Del Mar Smith was quick out of the gate again. “You just have to be lucky enough to be on the best horse,” says the hall of famer. “I have been at the right place at the right time and have been very fortunate to be on a lot of great horses over the years.” As the current rider of talented three-year old Shared Belief, veteran juggernaut Game On Dude, and many other top Thoroughbreds, it looks as if the good fortune could continue. If racing fans are lucky, Smith will not get bored for at least a few more years.
