Irap has his AAA traveler card and the sky miles are accumulating for this ever improving three-year old Thotroughbred. A son of Tiznow, this Doug O’Neill trained colt is looking to chalk up another win in another state on September 23. After breaking his maiden in Kentucky with an upset win in the Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland, Irap won both the Ohio Derby and the Indiana Derby. After a game third place finish at the Travers Stakes in New York, the hard-running grandson of Storm Cat is making like Willie Nelson and is on the road again. Headed to Pennsylvania for the million dollar Pennsylvania Derby at PARX race course outside Philadelphia, Irap looks primed for another big effort.
“He came out of the Travers in good shape and he has shown he can travel and hold his form,” says O’Neill. “It’s going to be a tough race, but he has worked well over the track and we are excited to see him run.”
The grade 1 race at a mile and an eighth has attracted some of the top three-year olds in the country. With the male division as wide open as any in recent memory, the Pennsylvania Derby and it’s healthy purse may be just what a traveler needs.
