Kentucky Downs winner Snapper Sinclair will next be seen toeing the track at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby day. This courageous son of City Zip will likely start in the one turn Pat Day Mile on the Downs dirt May 5. Because of his versatile level of talent, the Bloom Racing owned colt also may be considering a trip over the Twin Spires turf in the mile and a sixteenth American Turf Stakes which is also on the Kentucky Derby undercard. After winning the Juvenile Turf Showcase in impressive fashion at Kentucky Downs on September 6, 2017, Snapper made one more start on grass (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf) before making the move to dirt as Kentucky Derby glory beckoned. After finishing an encouraging third in the Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds in Louisiana on January 13, the Steve Asmussen trainee ran huge in finishing second in the Risen Star on February 17, also at the Fair Grounds. His attempt to take a strong field gate to wire may have been nipped by a nose, but the Derby fever spiked for team Snapper. Kentucky Derby dreams ended after a rough trip in the Louisiana Derby yielded a fifth place finish, but Bloom Racing is eager to showcase their talented colt on one of the most glorious days the sport offers. According to Bloom Racing, Snapper’s path for 2018 will be mapped out after Derby day with a potential return to the grass of Kentucky Downs a possibility.
