Bob Baffert is taking a veteran approach with his talented trio of Kentucky Derby contenders. Mourinho is slated to run in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on February 19. Beyond that there are no definitive plans for this speedy son of Super Saver. Baffert’s other pair are working towards their next trip to the starting gate. McKinzie and Solomini will be separated with one going to the Rebel Stakes on March 17 at Oaklawn and the other in the San Felipe at Santa Anita on March 10. “All of them are doing good right now,” says the California based conditioner. “We have not decided who is going where just yet. We just want to take things one day at a time and not get too ahead of ourselves.” With four Kentucky Derby triumphs already (1997,1998,2002,2015) the hall of famer understands things can change in the swash of a tail. The144th Run for the Roses is slated for May 5.
